Youth Competitive Soccer (Rep) - Markham Lightning Program

The Competitive (or Rep) program is for players with outstanding soccer skills who represent the Markham Soccer Club in various competitive leagues. Players include both boys and girls born between 1996 and 2006 inclusive. We have many teams in the U8 to U18 age range for boys and U8 to U18 for girls.

Our competitive program follows the Player Development Model at the heart of the Ontario Soccer Association's (OSA) Long Term Player Development curriculum.  The Markham Soccer Club promotes "Open Development" for all interested youth players. At the Markham Soccer Club we believe there is a level of play for everyone. Interested players are encouraged to join our programs by contacting the office. Players will not be "Deselected" based on ability. The Markham Soccer Club believes in fair play time for all players.

Most of our competitive coaches have advanced their coaching education to varying degrees, achieving certification ranging from a Pre "B" certification to CSA National B. All of our competitive team officials submit a Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) in accordance with the club's Risk Management Policy before they can coach in the Markham Soccer Club.

The club also is a licensee for the Ontario Player Development League (OPDL).  Click HERE for more information on our OPDL program and information on trials for our teams. The OPDL is an Elite Player Development program (training and games) developed and managed by the OSA.

WINTER ACADEMY - Our rep teams participate in a Winter Academy program that consists of Indoor League Play (YRSL, Downsview Park, Hershey Sports Zone) and weekly academy and team practice sessions held within indoor facilities at either Mt. Joy or the new Markham Sports Dome (McGivney).

The Time Commitment

Competitive teams generally practice twice per week and have one game per week from May-September (summer) and October to March (winter). The amount of travel depends partly on the age group and the level of the team. Competitive teams usually enter a few weekend tournaments. Most of them operate year round and play in indoor as well as outdoor leagues.

The season for the summer begins with the tryouts in early March with the teams beginning training in April. The game schedules generally begin in May, ending by early/mid September.

Many of our teams participate in a winter academy program that runs twice weekly for each team, with a game on Saturday or Sunday in one of the competitive indoor leagues (Downsview Park).  Our fall tryouts to select the winter academy teams take place in late September/early October, with the Winter Academy Program operating from late October to March.

Where do they play?
The U8 to U12 teams play in the York Region Soccer League, with travel within the fifteen York Region based soccer clubs. Our entry level Under 8 teams play in eight festivals throughout the summer within York Region.

Our boys competitive teams from U13 and up play in the Central Soccer League or in the York Region Soccer League. They may play teams from York Region, Toronto, Durham Region and the Huronia District.

Our girls competitive teams from U13 and up play in the Central Girls Soccer League or in the York Region Soccer League. They may play teams from York Region, Toronto, Durham Region and the Huronia District.

In addition, we have competitive women's teams in the Ontario Women`s Soccer League (OWSL) and men's teams competing in the Ontario Soccer League (OSL).

The Cost
Our rep program fees are somewhat higher than the fees charged for our House League programs. The extra fee is necessary because of the higher cost of registration, uniforms, fields and referees for competitive teams. The board of directors set the fees for all outdoor programs in January.

In addition, teams may charge additional fees for their "team account" to cover expected costs that are not included in the club rep program fees. All rep teams present a budget to the parents of the players on the squad following the try-outs.

Player Selection
Competitive team try-outs are held in the spring and fall. The Fall try-outs are designed to select players to participate in our rep winter academy programs and/or indoor leagues. Try-outs held in early March are designed to select the roster for the upcoming outdoor season.

Our try-outs are advertised in the Economist and Sun and on this website. TEAM CONTACTS.
